Foyles war among the few7/11/2023 When some rare coins are later found to be missing from the rubble, Foyle finds that other bomb sites have been similarly and systematically looted. Sunday's opening episode, "Fifty Ships," begins with a bang as a German bomb hits the boardinghouse where Sam is living and kills another young woman. But context is vital to Horowitz: No matter how heinous the crime may be, we not only believe it more readily because of the carefully detailed realism of its setting, but we also gain a deeper moral perspective on the crime.Īs important as the ancillary characters and village life are to the series, none of this would work as well as it does without Michael Kitchen in the central role of detective Christopher Foyle, a graying widower with a grown son in the RAF who is aided in his work by his brooding but loyally steadfast sergeant, Paul Milner (Anthony Howell) and his able driver, Samantha Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks). Lesser writers tend to throw in a bit about the butcher here or a side trip to the seashore there in a kind of halfhearted stab at verisimilitude. Horowitz is especially skilled at weaving the central mystery into a full and realistic tapestry of everyday life in Hastings in 1940. Not only do these new chapters prompt us to consider how individual murders stack up against the deaths of thousands in battle, but they also depict, with sadly detailed precision, a certain moral ambiguity on the home front that has more than a coincidental relationship to the fact that England is at war with Germany. The idea of setting a murder mystery in the midst of war is more than a mere plot convenience for Anthony Horowitz, the gifted creator and writer of the "Mystery!" show's "Foyle's War," which begins a new round of shows Sunday night on KQED.Īlthough setting plays a part in the telling of any good story, the fact that the murders in and around Hastings on the south coast of England occur while the nation is at war adds an important thematic perspective to the four stories in the second "Foyle's" series. Of course, Foyle trusts that his son is innocent but how can he help him if Andrew refuses to tell the truth?
